Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands and is located approx 35 miles off the North Coast of Honduras.

To enter Honduras you need a valid passport. You can stay 30 days in Honduras before renewing your visa. Extensions are possible to a total stay of 90 days. Upon departure, you are required to pay a U.S. $30 departure tax which is payable only in Lempiras or U.S. dollars. Credit cards and traveler's checks are not accepted.

The Lempira is the official currency of Honduras. Major credit cards are widely accepted and cash withdrawals can be made using credit cards at several banks. Travelers Checks are also accepted in many businesses; check before you "buy".

The local inhabitants of Roatan speak Caribbean English and Spanish.

Roatan is 32 miles long and varies in width from 1 to 3 miles across. The island is surrounded by nearly 70 miles of living reef making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

Roatan is home to an International airport. American, Continental, Taca, Iberia and Sol Air all fly to Roatan in conjunction with local carriers. From Europe, many air carriers are available as well.

Roatan is on the Central time zone and is located 1,100 miles south of New Orleans.

Taxis are the primary mode of transport on Roatan; fees are negotiable and a price should be agreed on before entering the taxi to avoid problems. Prices are higher at night.

Mini buses (collectivas) are also available in the daytime and pass by approximately every 30 minutes, and prices are set.

The principal island road is paved. Rental cars are available on Roatan, and U.S. drivers licenses are valid. We recommend that you reserve your car in advance if you want to have one available upon arrival at the airport.

Roatan is home to many fine restaurants offering a great variety of local and international cuisine. Fresh seafood is a specialty.

Coxen Hole is the main town on Roatan and is home to grocery stores where a wide range of food products can be purchased. Banks and ATM's are located in Coxen Hole, too.

It is highly recommended that during your stay on Roatan, you drink bottled water only, which can be purchased in small bottles at grocery stores. Bottles of 5 gallons can be purchased at Sundancer Cabanas office.

For medical emergencies, there are the Roatan Municipal Hospital and Woods Medical Center in Coxen Hole. Air ambulance services to the mainland or the U.S. are available. A decompression chamber for divers is located at Anthony's Key Resort.

We suggest that you bring an insect repellant to Roatan and that you use it in the late afternoon.

Sundancer has 24-hour security. We recommend that, while in Roatan, you use some basic travel precautions such as not carrying large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewelry, and do not leave goods such as cameras, bags, and travel items lying around.
